What to check before you buy

Used road bikes are mostly about the frame and the groupset. On carbon frames, inspect the top tube, down tube and around the bottle bosses for any crack or paint spider-webbing, and ask whether it has ever been crashed. Check the chain with a wear tool if you can - a stretched chain usually means the cassette and chainrings are worn too, which adds up quickly on higher-end groupsets. Make sure the frame size genuinely fits you rather than buying a bargain a size out, and confirm which wheels, saddle and pedals are actually included.
