What to check before you buy

Second hand tyres are only worth it if there is real tread left. Look for a squared-off centre on road tyres, cracked or perished sidewalls, cuts in the casing and any bulge, and check the date if it is printed - rubber hardens with age even unused. Confirm the size (both diameter and width), whether the tyre is tubeless-ready, clincher or tubular, and whether it is a folding or wire bead. A lightly used, recent tyre is a good buy; an old one at any price is not.
